Mr. Kitack Lim

Secretary-General - International Maritime Organization (IMO). 

Keynote Speaker

Mr. Lim (Republic of Korea) is the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). 

Born in Masan, Mr Lim graduated from the Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU), Busan, and worked on ships before joining the Korea Maritime and Port Administration in 1985. From 1986, Mr. Lim participated in the Republic of Korea delegation to IMO meetings. In 2006, he was appointed as Maritime Attaché, minister-counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in London and served as Alternate Permanent Representative to IMO until August 2009. Mr Lim was then appointed Director General for Maritime Safety Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM).  In 2011, Mr. Lim was appointed Commissioner of the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST).  In 2012, he became President of Busan Port Authority, until January 2016 when he took up his appointment as Secretary-General of IMO. Mr Lim holds master’s degrees from Yonsei University, and the World Maritime University (WMU).

Wajdi Abdmessih, the founder and the President of Seahawk Services, has over 25 years’ experience in fuel oil testing and inspection.  Wajdi has held various positions in a Marine fuel inspection and testing company as a laboratory manager, branch manager, technical director,  vice president and president. He has personally analyzed hundreds of thousands of Marine fuel oil samples from across the world, work with fuel oil refinery’s as well as fuel suppliers on fuel blending and troubleshooting hundreds of fuel problems and effectively help fuel oil management/operator on navigation problematic fuels.

Following to his highschool education at Zonguldak TED College, he was graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of Kocaeli University and obtained a post graduate degree in Geophysical Engineering from ITU, in Istanbul. But, Mr. AKARTAŞ elected to enter the challenging sector of shipping, even before completion of his studies by establishing Pacific Shipping Agency at Kocaeli in 1999. This modest beginning was the prologue of the evolution to a Shipping Group of today integrating; Chartering&Brokerage, Shipping Agencies, Project&Logistics, Ship Repairs, Ship Management, Ship Owning.
The Pacific Shipping Group today manages a fleet of ten world-wide trading vessels, fixes hundreds of charters annually, undertakes transport of project cargoes and logistics for global clients and provides ship agency services to international ship-owners. In recent years, he expanded the range of his business in other competitive and thriving sectors ranging from software development to real estate and agriculture and he gathered the companies under the name of Akartas Investment Holding.
Currently Mr. AKARTAŞ is the Board Member of IMEAK Turkish Chamber of Shipping, Turkish Shipowners Association, Turkish Coaster Owners and Operators Association. Mr.AKARTAŞ is 43 years old and married with two daughters.

Mr. Baron is the Chief Executive Officer of Minerva Bunkering, one of the largest independent physical suppliers in the marine fuels industry, and a subsidiary of the Mercuria Energy Group. 

 

Minerva serves customers in 150 ports worldwide with an extensive portfolio of dedicated bunkering tankers and storage terminals.  Prior to joining Minerva, Mr. Baron led the financial and operational restructuring of Aegean Marine Petroleum Network, Inc., later acquired by Mercuria. 

Mr. Baron has two decades of experience in the investment management industry specializing in equity and debt securities of companies operating in the energy, industrials, business services, and shipping sectors. 

 

Mr. Baron attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Haas School of Business.

Born and raised with  a long term interest in the maritime industry. This interest led her to persue and receive her Bachelor degree from the Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering.

After graduating, she worked on VLCC tankers. This led her to a career which was often challenging but always rewarding where she was fortunate enough to travel and work globally and helped to foster an interest other culturest and perspectives.

Her quest for a new challenge has led her to bunker industry which affords new opportunities to work and learn globally. Currently she is working as bunker trader at Dan-Bunkering,  Dubai office since Feb/2019. Friends and family are very important for her and in her spare time she enjoy their company. She is also a professional rhythmic gymnast since the age of four and also enjoy snowboarding, running, swimming and travelling.

Steve is the Group Commercial & Business Development Director for Veritas Petroleum Services, responsible for the development and implementation of VPS global commercial strategy, since joining the company in July 2016,

 

Graduating from Northumbria University with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Chemistry, Steve worked as an R&D Chemist for BNFL, ICI and Sanofi-Aventis, before joining Anachem Ltd, in a commercial role within laboratory instrumentation in 1997.

 

Progressing his international commercial career, Steve moved from technical sales to Sales & Marketing Manager, before becoming the General Manager for a1-Envirotech, gaining formal business management qualifications and awards along the way.

 

Steve joined Lintec Testing Services Ltd, a subsidiary of Intertek, as Operations & Key Accounts Manager in 2007, before becoming General Manager of Lintec in 2011, then Director of Intertek ShipCare in June 2012, a role held until joining VPS.

Peter Beekhuis

Peter is currently head of Maersk’s East of Suez Oil Trading (MOT) team, responsible for the group’s physical bunker supply chain in Singapore and Malaysia as well as their fuel requirements across the remaining ports in the region. He is also the Maersk representative on the Singapore Shipping Association Marine Fuels Committee

He began his tenure with MOT in 2009 after spending the first 10 years of his career in FMCG Sales in his native New Zealand. Prior to his move to Singapore in 2017, he was responsible for MOT’s European trading, leading a team of 10 traders and operators. During his tenure in Europe, Peter expanded MOT’s bunker supply business in Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam to Maersk group vessels as well as third party customers.

Peter holds degrees in Finance and Geology from the University of Otago, New Zealand.  Peter is married, with three young daughters. 

Simon Bennett

Simon Bennett is Deputy Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping, the principal global trade association for ship operators. As secretary to the ICS Board of Directors, Simon is responsible for coordinating overall development and representation of ICS positions on a wide range of issues, from environmental performance to the maintenance of free trade principles, and helping the Board to determine and deliver on ICS priorities. This includes the promotion of global regulation for a global industry, which is sound and carefully considered, and ensuring that shipping’s regulators fully understand the implications of their important decisions. A history graduate from Oxford University, during a 30 year career with ICS, Simon has represented the industry at, among others, IMO, ILO, the UN in New York, UNFCCC, UNCTAD, OECD, WCO and WTO, as well as APEC and the EU. A particular current focus for Simon is leading the industry’s response to the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Danae Bezantakou

One of her biggest accomplishments is the organization of NAVIGATOR – THE SHIPPING DECISION MAKERS FORUM  https://navigatorltd.gr/forums/ .NAVIGATOR FORUM is the oldest Greek Shipping Forum, enhancing the open dialogue among the stakeholders of the Greek and International Maritime Clusters annually since 2001.

                

She is the Concept Founder of Young Executives Shipping (YES) FORUM - the platform of open dialogue among principals, executives and university students, recent graduates and young executives in Shipping and Sea Tourism Sectors. She also serves as Secretary General of International Propeller Club (Port of Piraeus) and President of iforU-Greek Mentoring Network, which empowers women’s entrepreneurship through mentoring & networking. 

 

Danae was appointed as European Young Leader in 2013 and as Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum in 2015.

 

Danae represented Greece twice in International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) of State Dpt.   in 2011 and in 2017. She is founding member and was the 1st President of the Hellenic U.S. Alumni Association of State Department Programs. Her dedication to the growth of Entrepreneurship made her to be named as a Role Model in the campaign  #Makingithappen  organized by the U.S. Embassy to Greece.

 

She regularly participates as a speaker, judge or mentor in startup competitions, Shipping fora, school and university lectures and events related to entrepreneurship.

 

She holds a Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality and Tourism Management from the University of Surrey. She has an 11 year old daughter.

Kieran Michael Brown

Kieran Michael Brown leads the credit and compliance department for the Island Oil group of companies. The group includes physical supply operations in Cyprus, Israel and Romania and has b2b trading desks in Cyprus, Greece, Singapore, Shanghai and most recently London. The group includes shipmanagement companies, a spares business, investments in bunkering barges and tankers as well as LPG and dry bulk vessels, and is the part owner of a marine software company. The group is ISO 9001:2015 certified, its QM system is DNV-GL

certified, and holds two EMSA spill response contracts in the East Med and Black Sea.

 

Kieran Michael began his career as the Greek, Turkish and Russian credit analyst at Dynamar in the early 90s and subsequently became an analyst at Standard & Poor’s then Lloyd’s. His credit management roles included serving as head of global credit at Bunkers International and as WoS credit at Bomin.

Patrick Burns currently assesses the US fuel oil markets for S&P Global Platts, and has been in that role since August 2015, which includes the USGC HSFO assessment, one of the largest Platts benchmarks. He was an Associate Editor on the Platts Forward Curve and Americas Bunker fuel markets with the company, and has been on the oil team since April 2013.

John Butler

President & CEO - World Shipping Council (WSC)

John Butler was named President and CEO of the World Shipping Council (WSC) in August 2015 after serving as General Counsel for the association since 2010.

 

Prior to joining the World Shipping Council, John was a Partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Sher & Blackwell, where he served as outside counsel to the WSC. For almost two decades, he advised liner shipping companies and trade associations on regulatory, commercial, security, hazardous materials, environmental, contract and anti-trust issues. He has represented the liner shipping industry in federal agency rulemakings, legislative activities, and federal court litigation on a broad range of security, environmental, regulatory, and commercial matters.

 

John has been admitted to the bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C., Ninth, and Third Circuits.  He is a former President of the Maritime Administrative Bar Association.

 

John began his legal career as a Law Clerk in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Administrative Law Judges. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Colorado College and a Juris Doctor, with honors, from George Washington University Law School.

Constantinos studied Law in Greece (LLB) and England (LLM in Maritime Law - University of Southampton). He is a qualified Greek lawyer since 1997 and English solicitor since 2002.

From 1998 to 2002 he was the Legal Counsel of Excel Maritime Carriers, a Piraeus-based shipping company listed in NYSE. From 2002 to 2004 Constantinos worked as a marine litigation solicitor at Holman Fenwick & Willan, both in London and Piraeus. Between 2004-2013 he was a shareholder and Director of Quantum Shipping Ltd., a shipping company of Constantinos’ family interests, where he was responsible for the company’s investment strategy as well as for all legal, commercial and managerial issues.

In 2014 Constantinos joined Starbulk, serving as General Manager of a number of private vessels and subsequently as Executive Vice President - Control Director of the group’s procurement arm, Ship Procurement Services SA. Since 2019 Constantinos is serving as Starbulk’s Bunker Director, responsible for bunkering procurement / strategy and Starbulk’s cooperation with bunker industry stakeholders.

In 2020 Constantinos was, for the first time, a candidate in IBIA’s Board elections and got elected as IBIA’s Board Member.

Chris Chatterton

Mr. Chatterton joined the Methanol Institute in February 2015, managing MI’s CIS, Asia Pacific and Middle East operations.  Over the past 20 years, Mr. Chatterton has worked at the executive level across the energy, shipping, automobile, renewables and chemical sectors, where he has been responsible for creating strategy, fundraising, restructuring, crisis management and operations for both start-ups and multinationals. 

After launching a successful business incubator in Kazakhstan, circa 1994, Chris discovered a passion for educating, connecting and guiding like-minded entrepreneurs.  Since then, he has led several energy and agricultural organizations to successful IPOs in addition to numerous cross-border private placements in the EU, Asia, Middle East and CIS and is active in the start-up space as a founder, thought leader and investor.

Timothy Cosulich

Timothy started his career as a Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers first in London and then in Madrid, in the Valuation & Strategy department, focusing on M&A transactions. He then got his MBA from INSEAD and later on joined the A.P. Moller Maersk Group in The Netherlands as a General Manager, focusing on New Terminals acquisition and development. In 2010 Timothy joined his family business, Fratelli Cosulich, where he sits on the Group Board of Directors and holds the role of CEO - Marine Fuels.

Fratelli Cosulich is a diversified Group founded in 1857, fully owned by the Cosulich family, now at its sixth generation. The Group is active in a number of aspects of the Shipping Industry, from ship-owning, to ship-agency, freight-forwarding, catering, manning, yacht-services, and marine fuel trading and supplying. Fratelli Cosulich has offices in 15 countries, approx. 1,000 employees worldwide and a yearly turnover of USD 1.9bn.

Nigel Draffin

NIGEL DRAFFIN served at sea with Shell from 1966, coming ashore in 1979 working in New Building, Research and Operations departments.  In 1996 he moved to Bunker broking first at Gibsons then at LQM Petroleum Services where he was Technical Manager before retiring in 2015. He has sailed on and supervised the construction and operation of bulk carriers, oil tankers and gas carriers. He has acted as a consultant on technical issues for over 22 years. He given expert opinions and is a supporting member of LMAA. A founder member of the International Bunker Industry Association, serving on its board and as Chairman in 2012. He is a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology, Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Fuellers and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights. He is the course director of the Petrospot bunkering courses and a regular presenter at bunker conferences. He has written 12 books on Bunkering and Shipping published by Petrospot.

Unni Einemo

Welcome Address

Unni Einemo joined the IBIA secretariat in April 2016 as its IMO Representative, Media and Communications Manager after two years as a non-Executive board director. She was promoted to Director in order to serve as the global head of the Association in September 2018 following a unanimous decision by the board of IBIA.

Prior to joining IBIA, she worked for two decades as a journalist and analyst in the marine fuel and shipping industries in her capacity as Managing Editor for the highly regarded Bunkerworld and Sustainable Shipping specialist news services at Petromedia, and later Platts, which acquired Petromedia in July 2015. She has gained expert knowledge through engaging with industry, attending numerous maritime and energy conferences, and regularly attending IMO meetings, and has herself become a sought-after speaker at industry events. In 2018, she was named among the “Top 10 in regulation” in the Lloyd’s List annual most influential people in shipping series.

Eric is a seasoned Executive with over 38 years of leadership experience and expertise in finance operations, global sourcing and fuel management  of marine fuels, sales and marketing of global fuel supply, marine transportation and infrastructure management, sustainability projects,  development of alternative fuels , and managing environmental compliance measures to meet the IMO 2020 regulations.

During his career he has worked for large NYSE traded companies Carnival Corporation, El Paso/ Coastal Refining and Marketing and ICON International.  Currently, Eric is an Energy Consultant-Strategic Advisor for Marine Fuels, LNG and Sustainability.  He is supporting and engaged with various clients in the marine fuels, finance, petroleum, and oil infrastructure operations. He would welcome the opportunity to discuss fuel management process and optimization with shipping interests.

Eric’s experience includes working on various projects including Carnival Corporation’s Exhaust Gas Cleaning Project with the USCG and EPA, and the development and implementation of bulk LNG as a marine fuel. Other leadership responsibilities include lobbying and government affairs, international sales and marketing, asset management, human resources and business development. He has vast experience in creative management of billion dollars spend through innovative strategies and market driven negotiations.

Eric is a founding and two-time Board Member of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), served as an oil industry liaison on the Florida Department of Natural Resource Oil Spill Council following the enactment of OPA 90, and highly recognized fuel expert supporting the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA).

Trevor Harrison

Trevor Harrison is a full-time maritime arbitrator and mediator, with particular expertise in bunkering.  He is a barrister and was Head of Legal at Tramp Oil & Marine; previously he worked for a P&I club and a marine consultancy.

 

He is a Full Member of the LMAA, on the SCMA Panel of Arbitrators, a member of the Baltic Exchange, MCIArb, a CEDR accredited mediator, a Baltic Exchange-LMAA Mediator Panel member and a past director of IBIA. In 2011-12 he was also part-time Chief Executive of IBIA.

 

Trevor lectures regularly on maritime matters and dispute resolution and is the author of the book Legal Issues in Bunkering.

As Environment Manager, Elfian supports the work of INTERTANKO’s Environmental Committee focusing on issues relating to emissions to water and other technical and environmental matters that affect the tanker industry. He also provides support to the Secretaries of INTERTANKO’s Safety and Technical Committee and its Bunker Sub-Committee. Grant Hunter is BIMCO’s Head of Contracts and Clauses, responsible for overseeing the development, revision and promotion of BIMCO’s wide range of internationally used standard contracts and clauses. He has worked in the shipping industry for 40 years.

Grant’s career in the shipping industry spans over 40 years beginning as a deck cadet with Scottish shipping company the Ben Line Steamers Ltd, followed by eight years working ashore in the commercial and operations department of P&O Bulk Shipping in London. He has worked for BIMCO since 1997.

He has a Master’s degree in maritime policy and law from the London School of Economics.

On 14th of May 2019 at the BIMCO General Meeting in Athens, Sadan was elected as President of BIMCO thereby becoming the first woman to reach that position.

 

Sadan Kaptanoglu is the chairperson of TURMEPA and vice president of INTERMEPA. She is vice chairperson of Turkish Chamber of Shipping as well.

 

Sadan is the first winner of Seatrade young person of the year award in 2008.

Tom Keenan is the Executive Vice President of Marine Operations at Liberty Maritime Corporation and Liberty Global Logistics LLC.  He is responsible for Liberty’s Engineering, Operations, Insurance, Crew Personnel, Purchasing, Strategic Planning and Quality Management departments.
Prior to joining Liberty in 2003, Mr. Keenan served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of American V. Ships Marine and International Marine Carriers.  During his 22 years in that position, he was responsible for operational and technical engineering matters for 36 managed vessels.  Prior to his tenure at American V. Ships Marine/IMC, Mr. Keenan was Marine Superintendent Engineer at Apex Marine Corporation for seven years.
In 1992, Mr. Keenan was named as a Distinguished Alumnus of the State University of New York.  In 1993, he was awarded the Alumnus of the Year for the Maritime College.  In 2007, Mr. Keenan was honored for his ongoing contributions to SUNY Maritime College.
Mr. Keenan currently serves on a number of professional, educational and charitable boards and committees including the State University of New York, the International Association of Dry Cargo Ship Owners and other educational institutions and charities.  He is an elected member of the American Bureau of Shipping and serves on its Technical and Ship Operations and North American committees.  Additionally, he is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers as well as the Society of Marine Port Engineers.  Mr. Keenan is also Vice Chairman of Intercargo’s Technical Committee.
Mr. Keenan was born in New York City.  He graduated from the Maritime College of the State University of New York in 1971 with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture, a USCG Engineering License and a commission as Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Samantha Leow is the marine fuels technical advisor at ExxonMobil Asia Pacific. She has held several engineering roles in addition to having significant marine operations and supply experience. She enjoys ‘trouble-shooting’ and solving problems which, with her specific skills-set, allows her not only investigate and correct issues, but gives the opportunity to provide innovative solutions to our customers in meeting the industry’s changing requirements, while considering the impact on the environment.

 

In addition to her primary role, Samantha is an active member of the Technical Committee for Bunkering (under Singapore Standards Council) working with like-minded industry experts and professionals to promote bunkering standards and best practices.

Rob has a combined B.A. in Political Science and Teaching from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  Following a few years teaching Rob entered the Maritime Industry in 1981 as a Sales Representative for Cast Lines. Over the next 26 years Rob held a number of executive positions at Lykes Lines, CP Ships and Hapag Lloyd.

Looking for further challenges Rob entered the fuel management arena in 2006 as Vice President Sales Oiltest Marine Services. In 2012 Rob joined Bureau Veritas to assist in the newly formed VeriFuel division of Bureau Veritas where he remains today.

Deputy Secretary General Lars Robert Pedersen is responsible for BIMCO's technical and operational activities involving all technical and nautical issues within the area of marine environment, ship safety and maritime security. Lars Robert is furthermore responsible BIMCO’s activity related to regulatory developments relevant for shipping at international, regional and national levels. He joined BIMCO in early 2010 after a long career at A.P. Moller-Maersk. For more than 25 years he was involved in regulatory affairs at IMO level, technical management of the Maersk fleet of container ships and prior to that as seagoing engineer officer. Lars Robert holds an unlimited Chief Engineers license.

Charis Plakantonaki is the Chief Strategy Officer of Star Bulk Carriers Corp., the largest US listed dry bulk shipping company.
Before joining Star Bulk in 2015, Charis worked at Thenamaris (Ships Management) Inc. for seven years, initially as Strategic Projects Manager and subsequently as Head of Corporate Communications. Prior to Thenamaris she was a Senior Consultant at the Boston Consulting Group where she managed strategy development projects for multinational companies across different industries.
Charis received a B.S. in International & European Economics & Politics from the University of Macedonia, where she graduated as valedictorian, and a Master in Business Administration from INSEAD.
She is the Vice-Chair of the Clean Shipping Alliance 2020, and she also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Anatolia College in Thessaloniki and on the Advisory Board of the Blue Growth initiative.

Maureen Poh

Maureen’s practice spans the spectrum of shipping and commodity trading work, from charterparty, bill of lading and cargo disputes to commodity sale and purchase matters.  She has dealt with the concerns of shipowners and charterers leading up to IMO2020, and is frequently instructed to advise on bunker-related matters.  Maureen has also hosted (as moderator) and participated in bunker-related discussions.  She has particular expertise in energy-related commodity and shipping matters, such as the transportation and sale and purchase contracts for crude oil, oil and petroleum products, LPG and LNG.

 

Qualified to practise law in Singapore, and England and Wales, Maureen sits on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Maritime Law at the National University of Singapore. 

 

Maureen is lauded by Legal500 as “a key name for charterparty disputes, carriage of goods by sea and cargo claims”, and complimented for being “proactive, clear and fast in analysing specific points”.

Alexander Prokopakis is the CEO of LNG PRO Bunkers Holdings and the architect of the probunkers project. Prior to founding probunkers, he served Mamidakis Brothers Group as a senior executive, leading all of the Group’s Shipping, Bunkering and Aviation activities, through its respective companies: JetOil, JetTank and STYGA Compania Naviera. Mr. Prokopakis has over 20 years of professional experience in commercial leadership positions, over which he has attained deep knowledge and expertise mainly in the industry of shipping and bunkering. He is a Graduate of St. John’s University with an MBA in Executive Management and holds a BSc Degree in Business Management from the State University of New York.

Douglas has a strong background - spanning over 20 years - in marine fuels and ships’ propulsion machinery. He has managed a variety of laboratories and inspection offices prior to joining Lloyd’s Register in 2005 to lead its Fuel Oil Bunkering Advisory Services’ business through to 2013. From 2013 onwards he has held the post of Regional Advisory Services Manager Asia dealing with the non-Class services Lloyd’s Register offers the marine industry.

Manage the marine advisory services in Asia in the area of non-Class related projects, such as for example asset life extension consultancy, port consultancy, yard assessments and a variety of fuel related consultancy projects in the area of 2020 fuels, LNG as a marine fuel and methanol as a marine fuel to name but a few.

LNG Bunkers: Latest Developments and Future Outlook

Dahlia Rifai is LNG Bunkering General Manager within TOTAL Marine Fuels Global Solutions, in charge of the worldwide development of the LNG bunkering activity for Total.

She was previously LNG/GAS senior negotiator within the Gas, Renewables and Power division of the Group, in charge of Brazil, Myanmar and Thailand, also acting as Shareholder’s commercial representative for Total’s liquefaction plants, such as Angola LNG and Nigeria LNG.

In her early years, Dahlia held some positions within the Exploration Production division, among which, Public Relations and Joint Ventures Manager, and Economist for the Group’s investments in Australia, Myanmar and Middle East. Dahlia holds a post-graduate degree in Law from Paris X University.

Alexis X. Rodríguez Almanza

Obtained his degree in Laws and Political Science from Catholic University Santa Maria La Antigua with honors, Magna Cum Laude.  He holds a Master in Maritime Law, a Master in Maritime Business Administration in Ports, Environmental Management and Carbon Neutral, from Earth University, Deusto University, Bilbao, Spain and Catholic University Santa Maria La Antigua receiving Summa Cum Laude Honors.  He also holds a MBA from INCAE Business School and a Postgraduate in Maritime Energy from the World Maritime University.

 

Mr. Rodriguez was Professor of International law and international conventions on maritime issues, pollution and climate change at Catholic Universidad Santa Maria La Antigua in the areas. He was also visiting Professor at Sergio Arboleda University in Santa Marta, Colombia.

 

In the public sector he worked at the Panama Maritime Authority as Head of Compliance and Enforcement Department and at the National Environmental Authority as Director of the International Affairs Office.

 

Alexis Rodriguez has also worked in non-governmental organizations focused on environmental conservancy and has participated as speaker / moderator at International conferences related to environmental and maritime sector.

 

Currently, as a specialist in environmental protection in the Panama Canal Authority, seeks to strengthen the environmental policies of the Organization, in order to enhance The Panama Canal Route as the Green Route of the international maritime industry.

Charlotte Røjgaard is the Global Head of Bureau Veritas’ marine fuel services, VeriFuel.
Charlotte has a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and began her career at MAN Energy Solutions. Following a successful 15 years with MAN, she moved to Singapore to head up the technical team at DNVPS for five years. Charlotte joined Bureau Veritas in 2015 as Global Technical Manager for VeriFuel. In this time, she has been instrumental in strengthening the company’s marine fuels expertise and successfully launching the VeriFuel brand.
Charlotte represents Bureau Veritas’ VeriFuel at conferences and sits on numerous key industry committees, including ISO 8217/TC 28/SC 4/WG 6 and CIMAC WG7 Fuels for which she is currently the secretary.

Jesper Rosenkrans

Jesper Rosenkrans is currently the Global Sales and Business Development Director for TMFGS, in charge of all commercial and operational activities for both conventional and LNG marine fuels worldwide. He was previously the General Manager for TMFGS in Geneva, responsible for all conventional bunker activities in Europe and Africa. Jesper joined TOTAL in May 2018 after 10 years across a number of commercial leadership roles at the AP Moller-Maersk Group. His experiences include business development, bunker sourcing, and leadership roles within fuel and crude oil trading and sales. Jesper holds a MSc in Economics from Copenhagen University and a Bachelor degree in Economics and Political Science from the US.

Capt. Demostenes Sanchez Torres

Demostenes Sanchez Torres is a Nautical Science Engineer, with a title of Master unlimited; also has a postgraduate degree in Higher Education and a master's degree in Port Management and Intermodal Transport from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas of Madrid, Spain and from the International Maritime University of Panama, in the field of energy efficiency he has obtained certification with the United Nations Organization.

He has completed training courses with the United States Coast Guard, in inspections on passenger vessels and gas tankers, among other courses.

In the educational field, he has been a professor for higher level of engineering and master's degrees in various public and private universities.

In the public sector, he has held various posts as Regional Chief for the General Directorate  of Seafarers in the New York Office and later, in Miami - Florida.

Peter Sand

Peter Sand joined BIMCO in 2009 and holds the position of Chief Shipping Analyst. In this position, he is responsible for analysing the commercial markets for dry bulkers, tankers and containerships. Taking the offset in global economics as the analytical starting point for all seaborne trade, he assists managements, members and clients with insight into many different aspects of the global shipping industry.
Peter’s regular reports, focused analytical articles and insightful comments on the shipping market are widely read and have often been referenced in global mainstream media.
Teacher of Maritime Economics at the Danish Shipping Academy as well as guest lecturer at Copenhagen Business School: Blue MBA and BSc International Shipping and Trade.

Bob Sanguinetti

Bob Sanguinetti was born and raised in Gibraltar. After graduating from Oxford University, he served in the Royal Navy for almost three decades, rising to the rank of Commodore. The former mariner served at sea and commanded two Royal Navy warships and a multinational coalition Task Group before working at the Ministry of Defence in a number of strategic roles. His last job in the military was as Head of Intelligence at the UK’s National Operations Headquarters in North London.
He assumed the role of CEO of the Gibraltar Port Authority in May 2014. During his tenure, the Port of Gibraltar saw the reversal of a downward trend in vessel traffic and activity in most sectors through a series of initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening relationships with the local port community, and driving through a robust marketing and engagement plan with international ship owners and operators. He served on the board of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) from 2016 to 2019, and is currently a Council Member of Maritime UK.
Bob Sanguinetti was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the UK Chamber of Shipping in July 2018. His role includes responsibility for the UK shipping industry’s relations with government and other relevant bodies (national and international) on all fiscal, economic, employment, safety and environment, security and other issues. He is a Younger Brother of Trinity House, a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.

Cem Saral

Cem Saral is the CEO of the Cockett Group (www.cockettgroup.com), one of the world’s leading resellers of marine and petroleum products and services and has over 20 years of industry experience on marine fuels and fuel oil trading.

During his career Cem has been employed at various key trading and management roles by leading oil trading and marine fuel oil companies. He has a wide geographical coverage and direct working experience in Europe, Asia, US, Far East and the Middle East.

Having worked extensively at both marine fuels and fuel oil trading industries, Cem has a sound understanding of the entire fuel oil supply chain and physical trading on a global basis. As a further value-add, he has had the opportunity to employ these direct trading experiences into areas of business development, management and strategic M&A activities.

Prior to joining to Cockett, Cem was last employed as a fuel oil trader by Vitol, one of the world’s leading energy and commodity trading companies (www.vitol.com) and 50% shareholder of the Cockett Group. 

Cem holds a BSc degree in Operations Research from Turkish Naval Academy and throughout his career he has attended a wide range of programs on trading, risk, finance and management.

Gloria Shapiro

Gloria is currently the Credit Risk Manager for Tropic Oil Company which is a subsidiary of Parkland out of Canada.

 

She started her career in the oil industry in 1984 working for Coastal Refining & Marketing in Miami working credit on all refined products.  It’s there that she has been introduced to Bunker Credit aka the segment no one fully understood and many were afraid of. That began a love affair that has lasted 36 years.

 

She spent 18 years at Coastal and then moved on to World Fuel Services for another 15 years before coming to Tropic.

Alok Sharma

Jason Silber

Jason has been observing the ever-morphing marine and bunker scene for the better part of a quarter century.  Starting out in 1995 at Oxford-based MRC (the stone-age era predecessor to Lloyds Intelligence), he soon became team leader of their US office.   Following a diaspora in finance and a deep longing for the marine business, Jason jumped back into the briny as a senior analyst at Ocean Intelligence, moving on to found the business development unit of Peninsula Petroleum Ltd, and later shifting over to head Platts Ocean Intelligence, followed by the founding of SeaCred LLC in 2019, an innovative, rapid-response, get-smart-quick marine credit reporting and charter check agency.  Jason authors numerous articles on the sector and publishes the highly-anticipated semi-annual 'Top Ten Bunker Players' market survey report, in partnership with Ship & Bunker.

Steve Simms

J. Stephen (“Steve”) Simms is a Principal of Simms Showers LLP.  He serves as Chair of the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) Legal Working Group and is a past IBIA’s Board member.

 

 Simms Showers is one of the world’s most active law firms working in the area of bunker trader, broker and supplier representation, vessel arrest, maritime attachment, and related maritime remedies for creditors. The Firm has to date recovered over $700 million for its clients as the result of vessel arrest and maritime attachment proceedings throughout the world.

 

 Mr. Simms was selected for the United States Department of Justice, Honor Law Graduates Program and served as a federal prosecutor.  He was Editor‑in‑Chief of the Northwestern Journal of International Law and Business at Northwestern University School of Law (Chicago),  holds an M.A. in International Studies from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and a B.A. in International Studies from The Johns Hopkins University.

 

He is the Husband of his wife of 30 years, Denise, and Dad of daughter Alison and son John,  and of West Highland White Terrier Barrett, who enjoys chasing squirrels with the same enthusiasm that Mr. Simms has for chasing ships.

Tristan Smith

Associate Professor in Energy and Transport at UCL and PI of the Decarbonising UK Freight Network Plus project has, since 2010, grown a substantial group focused on modeling and analysis of shipping’s efficiency and emissions. He was PI of the RCUK funded Shipping in Changing Climates project, led the 3rd IMO GHG Study, is an author in the 4th IMO GHG Study, is lead author of ISO 19030, and has been involved in numerous projects across the academic, industry and policy domains. The group maintains a number of models including GloTraM, which is used by several multinationals to explore shipping's future scenarios and technology evolution. Along with Dr Simon Davies, he is co-founder of University Maritime Advisory Services (UMAS).

Zach Stansbury

Zach Stansbury manages GCC Bunkers’ commercial businesses, which include marine fuel bunkering, fuel oil supply and trading, distillate fuel supply and trading, naphtha marketing, and refinery feedstocks and economics. He has traded fuel oil and distillate fuel components, finished fuel products, crude oil and naphtha over the past 9 years at GCC Bunkers and NuStar Energy. In the marine fuels space, Zach has built relationships with, and supplied fuel to, some of the world’s largest ship owners. Locations of expertise are the US Gulf Coast, Caribbean and South American trading markets. Zach was a member of the commercial development team responsible for creating, sponsoring, and subsequently managing, a greenfield crude oil processing project which is currently operating in Galveston, Texas. Zach has an MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Mathias Steinø

Mathias Steinø is a partner of Hafnia Law Firm. Mathias has extensive experience working with banks, shipowners and suppliers in connection to financing, S&P, ship arrest, distressed companies, forced sales and pursuit of claims worldwide. He is on the board of the Danish Maritime Law Association and among the youngest Danish attorneys admitted to the Danish Supreme Court where he has successfully appeared on several shipping related cases. Mathias is often appointed as arbitrator and has experience as counsel in ad hoc, ICC and LMAA arbitrations and arbitrations under the rules of the Danish Institute of Arbitration. Mathias has been lecturing at the University of Copenhagen and at Copenhagen Business School for a number of years and was past lecturer of the year at University of Copenhagen. Mathias is a frequent speaker in various international fora particularly on items of worldwide debt collection and ship arrest.

Janet Strode

General Manager - International Parcel Tankers Association

A graduate in Modern Languages, Janet Strode joined IPTA in 1990 as Manager, Regulatory Affairs after returning to the UK from Rotterdam where she had worked for a number of years in the chemical tanker industry.

With the granting of consultative status to IPTA as a non-governmental organisation to the IMO Janet was appointed Permanent Representative to the IMO in 1997 and as such has been closely involved for many years in the legislative process affecting the shipping industry in general and the chemical/parcel tanker industry in particular.

Janet has acted as project coordinator for a series of IMO workshops on the implementation of MARPOL regulations and frequently addresses trade conferences on regulatory issues.  She plays a major part in the organisation of the IPTA/Navigate Chemical and Product Tanker conference held in London each March.

Janet is a shipping industry representative to the Chemical Distribution Institute Marine Executive Committee and serves on a number of industry bodies, including the EQUASIS Editorial Board and the FOSFA International Oils and Fats Committee, which governs the worldwide transport of animal and vegetable oils and fats.
